InitiaLit

At O’Sullivan Beach Primary School, the InitiaLit program is utilised in classrooms on a daily basis to establish a strong foundation in literacy for students in their first three years of schooling (Reception to Year 2). This evidence-based whole-class program emphasizes systematic synthetic phonics, vocabulary development, and comprehension skills, ensuring that all children acquire essential reading and writing abilities.

Intervention programs

For students requiring additional support, the school implements MiniLit and MacqLit intervention programs. MiniLit is designed for Year 1 and 2 students who struggle with reading, offering targeted small-group instruction to enhance their phonemic awareness and reading skills. For older students in Year 3 and beyond, MacqLit provides further intervention, focusing on explicit reading strategies to help them catch up with their peers. Together, these programs create a comprehensive literacy framework that supports all learners at O’Sullivan Beach Primary School.

Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum

The Keeping Safe: Child Protection Curriculum (KS:CPC) is required for all children and young people in our school. It’s taught each year by teachers who have completed a full-day KS:CPC training course.

It teaches children to:

  • recognise abuse and tell a trusted adult about it
  • understand what touching is appropriate and inappropriate
  • understand ways of keeping themselves safe.
